Random Stuff - Gonna Be Fun!

- Women can breastfeed even with nipple piercings. I knew that 10 years ago! I wrote a piece on genital and nipple piercings for BME - Body Modification Ezine many years ago and have encouraged women to not flip out about their piercings when it comes to birth and nursing. Clitoral piercings might need to be removed... inner labia piercings, sometimes (depending on where they are)... outer labial piercings tend to do fine... some women feel better with rings and others with bars in their nipples - depending on which they'd be able to feel coming out better (if it fell out of the hole and before it went down the baby's throat). Belly button piercings often have to come out, though. I have seen a couple still there, but not often.

- Nursing during the Newborn Screen can help calm the child more than even a pacifier and a bottle of sugar water (some nurseries have sugar pacifiers - such a yummy combo, eh?). An on-going discussion amongst the midwives I know is whether the mother should nurse or even hold the baby during the heel stick for the newborn screen. I tend to have mom hold the baby, but not nursing - others ask dad or have a midwife hold the baby instead. The rationale is so the baby doesn't associate pain with the smell and touch of mom. I tend to offer the choice to mom and more moms choose to hold their babies than not. Rarely, dads will hold the baby; they usually leave the room.

- I once had a dad insist on circumcising his son and they had the mohel come and do it at their home. Mom refused to stay with the baby, so dad did. After the mohel left, dad was so upset that he chose to circumcise his son he punched a hole in the wall while changing the baby's diaper, seeing the damage he'd insisted upon.

- Sometimes it isn't just PMS. Sometimes it's not taking meds as prescribed.

- Just because no one comes to hear me speak doesn't mean I'm not heard. Or loved.

- When your toe is infected and oozing green pus off and on for two years, it's time to see the podiatrist.

- Just because you don't lose weight on a diet doesn't mean you can eat anything because it doesn't make a hootie bit of difference either way.

- It's not a good sign when the Internal Medicine Doctor calls you herself to tell you the second cholesterol test was worse than the first. Despite the liver's load with all the other meds, it might be necessary to go on statins anyway. A cholesterol near 300 isn't a good thing.

- Why does water taste so gross?

- I feel so much better when I don't read websites written by doctors with delusional disorders.
- I'm going to submit my belly picture to Shape of a Mother soon. I don't see many fat women there. Nor do I see women 20 years postpartum. I feel compelled to remedy both of those.

- It's so funny that hearing a horse neigh is enough to make me tilt my head and think, "I never hear things like that in my world!" I saw cows, geese, a donkey, a horse, and stray cats on a farm tonight. Isn't that funny that I find that interesting enough to write about? What would my farming ancestors think of me?

- I am horrifed we might be on the cusp of World War III. I am scared to be Jewish at the moment.

- On the 1-10 pain scale, I am at a constant level 4 with jumps to 7 every once in awhile, like when I wipe my butt or try to put on clothes. Or swim. Or climb out of bed. Or into the car. I hate hurting so much.

- I can't believe I forgot I have DVR (I wrote DVT and had to erase it) and didn't DVR Good Morning America the other day. I'm SO glad people shared what they said, though. And provided the link. It really did turn out much better than I expected. And I haven't ever seen a woman take off her shirt to nurse in public either. I've seen PLENTY of women topless postpartum, though. And me. And my partner, when we nursed. (We co-nursed. Every woman should have 4 lactating breasts in the house.)

- I don't pierce my nipples because if I did and walked the dog, I'd make sparks on the sidewalk. Oh, and the Infectious Disease Doc told me I was crazy if I ever pierced or tattooed again. sigh

- I can't believe Rachel Ray is going to have a talk show. Who was high when they thought of that one?

- I watched a drug deal "go down" in front of my car tonight. Very weird. Especially since the car in front of those cars was a Deputy Sheriff.

- Why is it easier to sleep on the couch sometimes?

- When can we move the giant-sized treadmill no one walks on out of our livingroom?

- I went to a Dim Sum restaurant in New York City once and ate two pieces of dessert because they didn't have one thing that was vegetarian. I yawned through the meal. We were there to see Lion King three months after it opened on Broadway. It was phenomenal and I have seen it three times since in Los Angeles and San Diego.

- I'm going to try and grow my hair out. It'll be nice to cover up the sores, although I believe it is the sores that makes my hair fall out in the first place. There's nothing quite like having a flaming scalp for hours a day or finding sores in every mucous membrane that exists. Yum.

- I'm going to try and sleep in a bed tonight. Here's hoping!

My first pregnancy(regular OB)I was told I would never make it through with the belly piercing(even though I told him I knew someone who had). Guess what-I did, and didn't take it out until I lost the ball for it during my third pregnancy(4th if you count a very early miscarrige). My belly was stretched enough that I was afraid trying to put the ball back on the ring might rip my belly. I don't get stretch marks though. At that point my belly really wasn't so hot to look at anymore so I left the belly ring out.

I agree and have been telling people the same thing for years.......yes, you can still breastfeed with nipple piercings.

Do you have hip arthritis? just wondering.

your random stuff is cool.

i wish you didn't live with chronic pain. :( i cannot imagine.

our little babe dry nurses on me alot, but i've often thought about taking domperidone to re-establish a supply for her. her mama may be going back to work soon and i think it would help. what do you think?

You're Jewish and you've only once had parents insist on circumcising? And you call the result 'damage'? Oy.

I don't have a hundreth of your expertise on pregnancy, newborns, etc...but I've been to a lot of brises. I've seen a bad mohel do a bloody job, and I've seen a good mohel at work. A good, very experienced mohel who uses (traditional sweet wine) anesthesia, works fast and tries to spill as little blood as possible, gives clear instructions for follow up care and visits the baby the following day to check himself that all is well. A good mohel who works hard to give circumcisions a good name.

water with a little lemon or lime squeezed in it isn't too bad and there are lots of mild herbal teas out there that are great iced (i think plain water tastes yucky too)

I watch drug deals go down out my bedroom window all the time, and it is weird...too bad I'm not a cop;)

Ugh, Rachel Ray is getting a talk show???

(Here you blog about such fascinating and wonderful subjects and I pick Ms. "Delish Sammies" to comment on! Promise I'll be back with something deeper someday!)

SAJMom: Good for you wearing your rings throughout the pregnancy. And I bet your belly *is* hot!

Jen: Nope, not arthritis (and the hips aren't the painful part at the moment). It's my coccidiomycosis that wanders through my muscles and bones. Big fun.

Sage Femme: I'm about to do a session at the local Gay & Lesbian Festival on alternative birthing for lesbians, including co-nursing. If you've ever lactated before, you can induce lactation simply by being more purposeful about the nursings - might want to add some pumping in there, too.

If you've never nursed, then pumping every few hours (on a schedule) before kicking in with the domperidone would be the best way to do it. Domperidone isn't usually a first line of defense. Where would you get it?

Anon: I am not completed with my Jewish conversion - we hope to have that happen before the High Holidays. The circumcision discussion is one the Rabbi and I disagree (LOUDLY) about.

I have had MANY, MANY clients choose circumcision. I shared this one anecdote because it came up that day, that's all.

I know that many Jews feel my beliefs are wrong and I can live with that. Many people think lots I do or say is wrong - and I can live with that, too.

I am me. Odd and contradictory. But just me.

quite the post- lots of things to respond to but what stands out I too felt that I might send a fat 19-30 years postpartum body pic--

I am worried about your cholesterol --- what are you doing to treat your liver??? am also wondering if having the cocci is causing your body to try and coat surfaces/insulate against damage control access or patch up cracks... just wondering mind you.
take care

Yes! Let's send "way past" postpartum photos! I was thinking that myself. I will if you will ;)

Rachel Ray.....If my family of 10 could eat on "only" $40 a day, that would only be $12,000 a month. :^)
