Ama Mama Offers Sneak Preview of Ricki Lake’s Latest Movie
“The Business of Being Born” chronicles childbirth in America through personal dramas, testimonials

ENCINITAS, CA – Ama Mama Holistic Healthcare will host a sneak preview of “The Business of Being Born,” a candid and eye-opening documentary produced by Ricki Lake that explores and questions the way American women have babies. The documentary will open nationally in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and 11 other unnamed cities later in October 2007. In addition to the screenings, Ama Mama will host a discussion session after each screening with Barbara E. Herrera, owner of Ama Mama and a Licensed and Certified Professional Midwife.

“Ama Mama Holistic Healthcare is proud to bring ‘The Business of Being Born’ to San Diego,” Herrera said. “Ricki Lake has done a great job creating a documentary where beautiful births weave in and out of personal stories and birth dramas that have us weeping with joy as well as frustration.”

In “The Business of Being Born,” Lake teams up with director Abby Epstein to explore the intricacies of the history of childbirth, insurance issues, malpractice coverage problems, on-going misunderstandings of who a midwife is and what a homebirth entails. The documentary follows Lake’s journey from a hospital birth that did not honor her birth plan to an amazing homebirth in her bathtub. Moviegoers witness short takes from Lake’s painful birth to triumph as she reaches to pull her baby from her body.

Through interviews, stories and testimonials, “The Business of Being Born” shows the world the dramatic dichotomy between the medical and midwifery model of care. Shocking facts regarding the historical and current practices of the childbirthing industry interweave with stories of couples who decide to give birth on their own terms. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2007 to wide critical acclaim.

The exclusive sneak preview of “The Business of Being Born” in the San Diego area will take place at Ama Mama Holistic Healthcare, located at 2146 Encinitas Blvd., Ste. 105-106, Encinitas, CA 92024. Screenings will be on Oct. 6 and 7 at 11 a.m.,1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and from Oct. 8 through 12 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
