When someone says that to you, do they really mean it?

Sometimes. Usually they just mean, "Tell me what I want to hear." Or, "Tell me what you think, but I'm still going to do what I've already decided to do." :-/

It depends on the person who is saying it. If it comes from family, or certain friends... yes, they really want my honest opinion.

From others, they still want it sugar coated. If I were to lay it out for them they'd only just be offended I'd said the truth.
Generally, I don't spend much time with those people anyway.

Not sure what context you're thinking of here, but if I were to say it, I'd mean "tell me like it is--I can handle it and I really want the raw truth."

Just heard the phrase "Be Honest" and watched the person who said it get all pissed off when the other person was. Was thinking it is one of those questions like, "Do I look fat in this?" where there's no real right/good/easy answer.

And Cri... I've seen your comments before, so I recognize you. And thankee for the nudge that people ARE out there and reading. Pushes me to get to writing already.

I do. . . but I almost always have an unspoke "but be kind" that goes along with it.

I try not to say it unless I REALLY mean it and have prepared for whatever their response may be. I do think some mean it, but alot of times, probably not.

I do read and have never commented. :) When someone says to me be honest I am pretty sure they don't know what they are asking for. I do try to be honest but also to be kind in it so I don't lose my friends. Those who are closest to me know me to be passionate about what I believe in and a straight shooter when I talk.

No one has ever said that to me in my entire life!!!

Because there is never any doubt that I'm not being honest with my opinion when asked for it. Otherwise i say nothing.
I'm polite,well socialized but honest.
