Meghann's Virtual Blessingway

(Erg! MotherBlessing.

Please forgive the excited faux pas; I did not mean to offend the very real and special Blessingway in the Native American tradition.)

Most of you know already, but my baby girl Meghann is due to have her first baby, my first grandbaby, at the end of August.

I leave on August 23rd to be with her as her mom, monitrice, doula and postpartum doula... coming home around October 1. Meggie, who was my UC baby, and her wonderful husband Brian, are having a daughter, Gabriella Grace. They've chosen to have their baby in the hospital with a great group of CNMs. I can't wait to meet them!

When Meg had her Baby Shower, I "participated" via Skype, leading the red yarn ceremony... each woman wrapping red yarn around her wrist while speaking of her maternal lineage, leaving the yarn in place until labor begins, then everyone removes it and lights a candle, sending her good wishes until the baby's born.

But, as beautiful as her shower was...

... (and it was!), I really, really want my daughter to have a MotherBlessing necklace.

MotherBlessing necklaces are made from beads that (usually) women offer as a gift to the pregnant mom that are all joined together into a necklace that she wears during labor... or uses it as a focal point if she doesn't want to wear it.

So, I'm holding a Virtual MotherBlessing for my daughter, asking you, if you feel led to, to send her a bead that I will make into a necklace for her. With the bead, please write the wish or prayer you're imparting onto the bead onto a piece of paper so she knows your thoughts, the wish she will carry with her during her labor and birth... and use as a reminder of her strength and power all her days as a mom.

If you're unable to send a bead, perhaps writing an Affirmation or prayer and sending that to her is something that would work. I've seen Affirmations drawn, painted, cross-stitched, scribbled, pieces of nature... whatever you feel Meghann could use as strength in labor.

And for those that cannot mail anything, if you would consider leaving her a blessing, affirmation or prayer, here on this blog post; I know she will gather great strength from what everyone has to share with her.

I will be documenting the entire experience and the necklace will have a prominent place in the story. I would love to include your gift.

Send beads and Affirmations to:

Brian & Meghann... Gabriella still to be seen.

I'm not sure anything I would post from Australia would make it in time...

So my blessing and wish for your beautiful daughter is this;

Surrender yourself and open, purest love awaits.
Every minute, every second that passes is delivering you both... xoxo

Would a prayer be appropriate? I don't want to offend...

Dawn: A prayer would be lovely! She's Christian. Though any prayer is welcome. No offense at all.

May they give their daughter the two things every parent should: roots and wings.

How big should the bead opening be? (Is it going on a regular sized beading string?)

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShelby

Erg!!! I don't know. I've only made one necklace before. It was on string, yes... I didn't put seed beads on it (those would have been too small), but regular beads and then the pretty big ones, glass ones. Does that help?

yup! Thanks.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving Meghann and Brian the blessing of parenthood. Thank you for the growing baby inside of Meghann's body. Thank you for each day, each week, each month. Thank you also for the wisdom Meghann has been able to glean from providers and from her own mother during this time.

I pray, Father, that Meghann and Gabriella would be surrounded by those who love and care about them during labor and throughout the birth. Please give the whole family peace during this time, and patience to allow Gabriella to appear when you have made her ready. Give Brian the ability to know what he can do to encourage and support Meghann through each change during labor, let her know his love for her. Let him know her love for him. Let him not feel he is not important, but that he is an incredible help and support to his wife.

Guide Meghann through each stage of labor, through pushing, and through the birth. Give her confidence and strength. I pray you bless her and Gabriella with health Please give her the ability to cope and relax. Give her a sense of excitement and anticipation as she waits to hold her baby in her arms. Let her be able to control what she needs to, and to surrender when she needs to. Let Meghann feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as she passes each stage of birth. I pray she and Brian have plenty of time to make decisions as to what they need during birth to have a healthy mom and baby. I pray the room be filled with love and laughter, with tears of joy, with quiet peace and serenity in the first moment the family meets as mommy, daddy, child, grandmother, and grandchild.

May this birth be a blessing to all involved, and may the memory of Gabriella's birth bring the family closer together. Grant these parents with wisdom in the days and years ahead as their sweet daughter grows in the grace and knowledge of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Birth is incredible. The ultimate physiological function! May birth bring a sense of human completeness. You welcome your daughter as your mother welcomed you and her mother welcomed her and so on into the past. Welcome to the tribe! (I will also try to send a bead, but I wanted to post also!

Dawn... beautiful!!

A dear friend and colleague said that following to me shortly before my son was born: "Two people go into the hospital, and three new people come out." No matter where the birth takes place, I believe that the sentiment holds true. Best wishes to your daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild as they begin the ultimate adventure together as a new family.

Meghann,

Birth, and parenthood, are journeys of transformation - trust your body and your instincts and let yourself be transformed in the most amazing way possible.

P.S. I love the idea of the neckless, but doubt anything would arrive in time from Australia.

Meghann-- sending you every good wish to be surrounded by love and strength as you bring your daughter into the world. Strength and love will sustain you through labor and as you transition into motherhood-- a phase of life that never ends. Love and blessings!

Barb, sorry, between living in NZ, and recently moving to Planet Newborn, I didn't get my act together to send a bead.

Instead, I'd like offer Meghann and her entire birth team the affirmation/ hypnosis trigger I used myself a little over 2 weeks ago: easy and peaceful. It's what I hoped Quinn's birth would be, no matter how he came out in the end, and it's what I wish for all births to be.

All the best to all of you on this exciting journey to (grand-)parenthood. Can't wait to hear the story and see the pictures!
